what will move through the country weatherwise. there is a storm developing. if you're in san francisco, it has been a deluge of rain. as we toward tomorrow, watch san francisco once again get hit with rain. you can see that move through. it does move out by monday. monday, the west coast is dry. here's what we're really watching. this will be our christmas week storm more or less. area of low pressure will develop here in the gulf of mexico. we'll bring in moisture from the gulf. there develops that low. this is christmas. it may not be white, but it will be wet. perhaps in little rock and new orleans and birmingham and atlanta, down here into the deep south. if we can get enough cold air down here, we may mix in a few snow flurries. we're keeping an eye on how deep that cold air gets. it looks like that low will develop. and across the country here into the midatlantic and bring some snowwednesday, thursday timeframe into the northeast again. we'll have to keep an eye on that. the focus for today, the northeast, of course, some snow showers even around new york city perhaps today. but
. fort lauderdale has trouble at the airport but that is not wind related. san francisco, the rain an inundation with rain today for you, as well. big picture today, the wind and rain and, of course, the snow off the great lakes in the northeast. the rain and mountain snow in the sierra we'll be tallying it up to feet of snow. some incredible ski conditions, but the balance of the country today is dry and a little bit colder than where we should be this time of year. a white christmas, look at the swathe of it. meet logically a white christmas is when there's an inch of snow on ground christmas morning. it doesn't have to be knowing at that time. so much of the countries will see that. but the forecast for christmas here in the northeast, not out of the question for boston and new york to see snow flurries. in the northeast predominantly it will be dry and cool. atlanta rain for you on christmas. nashville, as well. so cloudy and a little bit of rainy in the southeast. in the upper midwest to northern plains, cold but dry. minneapolis, fargo in the single digits. and out west, more

to work. just watching an interesting computer model. it's been a deluge, awful travel in san francisco the last couple of days. for tomorrow, watch california, here comes a next system. so another day in san francisco and seattle with rain. by monday, the west coast clears out. but here's the little interesting nugget that could happen. on monday, watch what happens here in the gulf. moisture comes up from the gulf, an area of low pressure develops. this is the deep south. birmingham to new orleans to atlanta, could be a wet christmas. rain, not a white one. then we could see this area of low pressure develop, and it's from tuesday to thursday in the mid-atlantic and northeast, we could be looking at another storm. we'll have to keep our eyes on that model. forecast, though, for today, pretty blustery. watching us from the northeast, new york city could see a few snow showers coming down. but the winds are pretty strong. so it's pretty chilly. so some snow in western great lakes. of course, we're seeing that, the lake-effect snow guns firing off. another wet day on the west coast, rand
in higher elevations in the form of snow. most of that is well north of san francisco and napa valley. this will sink further south, we'll get another piece of energy later on today that will spin up across the bay area and intensify the rainfall. that's what we will be watching closely. our computer models highlight that. one pulse to the north. another one fills in further to the south. it shouldn't be nearly what we saw last week. the ground is saturated. rivers are swollen. it won't take much to get more in the way of flooding. once we get past that, we are looking at a fairly dry scenario going over the next few days. today is the day. then tomorrow we'll hopefully be breathing a sigh of relief. >>> this morning intense fighting in syria outside the city of aleppo. rebel fighters trapped hundreds of government soldiers inside a military base and say they are giving them a chance to defect. this as president obama warns syrian president bashar al assad that there will be serious consequences if he uses chemical weapons against his own weapon. >> this regime is a real problem for u

miles east of san francisco, and the whole bay area has been impacted by a series of storms. the storm that's coming tonight, this will be the fourth storm in about a week, and we've seen, you know, downed power lines and trees and that kind of thing. at one point 340,000 people were without power, so with the storm coming tonight, this is the last thing this community needs. ashleigh? >> my lord. dan, it's a good thing no one ended up in that as they were driving. so i guess that's the light at the end of that tunnel. dan simon, thank you. chad, i want you to jump in here. i was reading through some of your information, chad. coy not believe it when i saw some of these location where is dan is and other people on the withest coast got one year's worth of rain in just a few days. >> in seven days. even mt. shasta, a pretty wet place, picked up 25 inches of rainfall in three separate storms. you add them all up. now all of a sudden that's like nine months' of rain in one location and other sports we know picked up almost a year's worth of rain in one week. now it's running off. there is
on the runway there. san francisco ensconced in rain and wind, so delays all morning and expected throughout the day, as well. so here's a look at the biggest problem in the northeast. not only do we have this lake-enhanced snow coming down so we're going to see another 4 to 6 inches, possibly more than that. in these lake-effect area that typically sees it in upstate new york and western new york. but it's the winds that are courtesy of the big storm, 20-, 30-mile-per-hour wind gusts. they will abate tonight, but they're still pretty strong. let's talk about a white christmas. historically, believe it or not, there's only a 10% chance of a white one. in new york city. 23% in boston. 33% of a chance in pittsburgh. 40% in chicago. looks like if only place that will see it on this board is pittsburgh because of the lake-effect snow. so look at this. a lot of the country, though, will see white xhals meergeally means we have an inch of snow on the ground christmas morning. even if it's falling we need an inch on the ground in the morning. that's where we're going to see that white christmas. lo

mean this in a technical way. san francisco-oakland area, there was a -- gun buy back. several different events. gun buy back events. they were planned before what happened here in newtown. but there were much larger crowds turning out than they had expected. you can see some of the evidence of what had been brought in. people were given $200 to bring in their zbns just hand them over to the authorities. ing the local reports say about 600 guns were turned in over the course of things event. some people saying to the authorities that they just needed to have those guns out of their homes. the president is calling for, quote, meaningful action on guns. many democrats are calling for strict new gun control laws. of course the assault weapons ban expired in 2004. there is some talk that maybe, maybe bringing that back would be a foot. the effect of what you saw in is an plan and oakland was different elsewhere. for instance, like arizona. some of the gun buyers in arizona became very afraid actually that this new national conversation, particularly my -- what happened this beautif

for clear weather. >> a big storm out west already delaying travel plans. san francisco bay area dealing with heavy rain and winds. in washington state, worst driving conditions in 30 years forced crews to shut down highway 2 in the cascade mountains. that's near stevens pass. bonnie schneider tracking the weather systems throughout the country. she joins us with the holiday forecast. delays, delays, delays, bonnie. >> this is not right now. we are anticipating the delays. the good news is, if you have a morning flight this christmas eve, i think you'll do okay. throughout the day, the delays will build across the south and even the midwest and especially out west because there's snow happening throughout the rockies and salt lake city, and you'll see that building in, especially west of denver up into the mountains. severe storms possible overnight into texas, southwest louisiana. as this front advances eastward, it's pulling down quite a bit of rain through north carolina and into tennessee. i wanted to show you this division here. we have wet christmas, and we have a white christmas.

in the middle of this enormous sinkhole in lafayette, california, about 20 miles east of san francisco. you can see some of the crews here clearing away the debris. let me explain to you how this happened. there is actually a creek that runs underneath this, or it did. and it basically got clogged and it tore away all the dirt, all the mud, and with it brought down the street. you can see the entire street basically caved in, no traffic going on either side. this is a major inconvenience for the people who live in this neighborhood. you can see one of the things that crews had to do is they had to set up a temporary sewer line. also a temporary water line. this is one of the lines here, they went to extraordinary lengths to make sure that the people in this neighborhood aren't affected in terms of their basic services. now, this was one of the storms that came by, just a couple of days ago, and, of course, more rain is in the forecast. this is really the last thing that people need in this area and throughout the bay area as well. brooke? >> dan, thank you. how about this? you've been putting o

. in a proposed class action suit filed in san francisco, a california instagram user accused the photo-sharing site of bach of access. it was suggested they would now have the right to sell your photos for use in ads without compensation. instagram's founder backtracked on that later after a massive backlash. >>> in the wake of the newtown massacre, a newspaper in upstate new york has actually published the names and addresses of all handgun permit holders in westchester and rockland counties. privacy advocates are now fuming at the journal news. the newspaper editor says it doesn't mean that there's a gun at that location but that someone there is licensed to have a gun. an interesting decision to do that. i'm not so sure that it was the right decision, no matter where you stand on the gun debate, but it's an interesting one. >> really is. >> one to talk about. >> it is. the classic push and pull between privacy which is very real, privacy rights and the desire for transparency, especially in the gun debate, especially given, of course, what happened in newtown. >> right, right, right
